Postgraduate study is study to a level that is higher than a first degree.  The reasons for pursuing a postgraduate degree are diverse and usually driven by personal needs and desires. Improving employment and salary prospects is not the only reason to pursue further study. People also undertake postgraduate study to specialize after doing a more generalize undergraduate degree, to gain profession registration, and to increase their depth of knowledge and expertise in their chosen field – so they can go on to do high-level work that is simulating, challenging, and ultimately more rewarding.

Postgraduate qualifications are highly favored in industries such as engineering, education, health and science, and finance and banking. In addition, postgraduate qualifications are becoming increasing sought-after in the corporate world, especially for senior executive positions. Stephen Scheeler, Director of Strategy and Innovation for Inchcape Australia, returned to postgraduate study as a mature-age student to complete an MBA and he believes that postgraduate qualifications definitely boost a person’s employment and earnings potential. To Stephen Scheeler, doing a MBA wasn’t just a means to getting high-paying corporate job – it was about learning and self-improvement. ‘It was very intellectually stimulating and opened my mind to disciplines which I hadn’t formally pursued before – like organization behavior, marketing and statistical analysis. I just found that interesting from a purely learning perspective.’
